I slept for a couple of hours, but I did not rest. Yes, there is a difference. I had tossed and turned all night. There was so much on my mind. Majorly, all I could think about was getting my shit together. Mello had let us stay that night, but I wondered how long we would be able to stay here with his woman and son being in the same house. I wondered how long I could take watching the man I loved be with another woman because the past wouldnât allow us to be great together.
That morning, as the sun rose, I was still lying on the couch, looking up at the ceiling and wondering how I could get a good-paying job with only a high school diploma.
Eventually, I had to use the bathroom, so I got up and crept upstairs.
As I tiptoed down the carpeted hallway, I heard voices on the other side of Melloâs doorway.
âWhat are they doing here?"I heard Paris ask.
âShe got into it with Ross and left him. They donât have anywhere else to go."
âHow long are they going to be here?â
âFor awhile."
âAwhile? How long is awhile?â My eyes rolled at the clear irritation I heard in her voice because of our presence.
âA fucking while! Gawd damn! Thatâs it." My eyes bucked at Melloâs attitude towards her. I had never heard him sound so harsh when talking to a woman.
âThatâs it? You arenât going to ask me first?â
âAsk you for what? This is my shit. I pay the bills here. I can have whoever the fuck I want staying in this motherfucker."
I lightly groaned and walked away from the door, shaking my head. Fuck my life. Things were going from bad to worse. I had gone from sleeping in a basic motel to running from niggas to sharing a space with the love of my life and his bitchie, stuck-up-ass girlfriend. This had all sounded like a good idea when Divine first suggested it. But now, sleeping in the car didnât sound so bad.
Once I was a little further down the hall, I slowly pushed the door open to TJâs room and peaked my head in on Divine and Sunshine. Divine had Sunshine cuddled under her as they slept soundly. I tiptoed in and slipped Divineâs cell phone off of the end table. It amazed me how Ross was such an asshole but still loving that he had kept Divineâs phone on. But as I crept back out, I remembered that I was his only punching bag. He was a godsend to everybody except me.
After using the bathroom, I crept back downstairs and out of the front door. It was a little after nine in the morning, so the sun had risen. The sub, thirty-degree temps were now gone, and it was now about fifty degrees already, so it seemed like it was going to be a nice day out. Even though it was the Windy City, we didnât feel the brutality of the potential freezing temperatures until well into December, so we still had some months left of decent weather.
